After a delayed start to the year thankfully we managed to get on the field. We stayed in the same grade as last year, lost 2 of the teams that we marginally finished in front of last season and saw several ‘A’ grade teams relegated to the B’s. As a result, it was expected to be a challenging year, and this was exactly what happened. After a reasonable start against Gwawley Bay, where we were extremely competitive and unlucky not to get a result. The next few games certainly put us back in our place and saw some difficult games and score lines that we probably expected. Going into round 6 and playing against the team that were equal last (Lilli Pilli 2) we were hoping for a competitive game. Unfortunately, the score line again blew out and while we were hoping for a favourable result, we lost 6-1. Following this game, we then saw ourselves up against the competition leaders Kirrawee. We showed how well we can defend and held them losing 1-0, a very respectable result particularly when there only goal was an own goal. From that point we managed to compete and kept the score lines respectable. We managed to win a game in round 9 1-0 against another of the lower teams Bangor. We then managed to compete again in the next few games and only going down 3-2 against the team who finished 2nd Lilli Pilli 1, although it must be said we did struggle to get out of our own half. We waited until the last round to record our finest moment with a 1-0 win against Grays Point who finished 3rd, they also beat us 6-0 in the first round so an excellent improvement. In the end while we defended and defended, we were unlucky not to score a couple of more goals. They had the better of the play, but we created the better opportunities. In the end a fantastic result and a game well played by all.
There were a few highlights and memories along the way.
After a horrible year last year from the penalty spot and 1 in the first round, we did manage to score a couple during the season. Well done to Jegers and Woody for converting their penalties.
The best team moment was no doubt our game against Grays Point a superb 1-0 win against the team who finished 3rd.
Best individual moment would probably be Joe, who had a magnificent game against the Minor Premiers Kirrawee continually being there when we needed him.
Our toughest game well when you are outplayed in most games, they were all tough. Grays Point in the first round losing 6-0 was a difficult day.
Brad & Scott finished the season as our leading goal scorers with 3 each.
Our defence improved, and we manage to concede just 13 goals in our last 7 games after conceding 28 in our first 6. 2 clean sheets resulting in 2 wins.
Playing a game in the 2nd last round on a field that was totally waterlogged, something you don’t experience anymore. It certainly meant we needed to play it a little different.
While we had a large squad with 22 players, we were able to play with 18 on the day providing more time for players to get a game. Injuries did seem to kick in quickly and we struggled to get 14 players available for the second half of the rounds.
A huge thanks to Pick who Coached us during the year running our Subs, never an easy task, well done Pick. Thanks to the supporters who showed up during the year and supported the team. Hopefully we provided some memorable moments, although patchy. To the team, it was a tough year, but we never gave up which showed at the back end of the season and in particular our last game. It was still enjoyable on and off the field and looking forward to another year next season. Next year hopefully we can look forward to playing in the C’s and being a little more competitive on the field.
