After a delayed start to the year due to the wet weather we finally got underway. With minimal training under our belt the first game was going to be tough, particularly up against a team we’ve struggled with over the last few years. An early morning start must have been a blessing, we managed to play a strong game and a had a good 3-1 win. However, from that point it was pretty much all downhill. We came up against a couple of tough teams in our 3rd and 4th games in Georges River and then Grays Point and was comprehensively beaten 5-0 and 7-2 respectively. We did improve over the next few games getting a few draws and a couple of close losses. However, our injuries mounted following 3 games in a week and something we struggled to overcome. The rain then set in again and were we only managed to get 1 game in 4 weeks. However, during and after these times we did compete in a few games. Our 3rd last game was a battle for the spoon, we probably played our best game and managed a convincing 7-1 win. Thus, securing a position to avoid the spoon. It was unfortunate that our last game was against a top team, and they demonstrated that they were simply too good for us demolishing us 10-0 a game we were never in. In the end we never really got into any rhythm either games or training and the lack of training probably didn’t help on game days.
There were a few highlights and memories along the way.
Guess the most memorable moment was our 7-1 win against Gwawley Bay, a game well played and showed what we can achieve.
Joe had a magnificent season and was a rock for us at the back.
Our forgettable game against River in the last round going down 10-0, they are a good team and I’m sure they’ll do well in B’s next year.
Our toughest run playing 3 games in 1 week against some tough oppositions, 2 in 3 days. Both teams finishing 2ndand 3rd However, we walked away with a couple of very good results.
Scott was our leading goal scorer during the year, he was also very energetic, his pace was always a concern for the opposition.
Mull saw red and in the same game Perry decided to give the referee some advice and the result was 10 minutes in the sin bin. This left us with 9 players for the last 5 or so minutes of the game. Hanging on for a draw.
Pim not managing to get a game in, get that knee fixed and come back next year.
A huge thanks to Spock who Coached us during the year running our Subs, never an easy task, well done Spock. Thanks to the supporters who showed up during the year and supported the team. Hopefully we provided some memorable moments, although patchy. To the team, it was another tough year, but we never gave up and showed glimpses in games of what we can achieve. Probably lack of training resulting in lack of touch and fitness didn’t help. Perhaps next year we look forward to D’s. However, I’m sure we can still compete in C’s if necessary.
