Firstly, we welcomed Scott Hughes and Steve Thacker into the team, hope you enjoyed the season and wasn’t too frustrated with us. This was a season heavily impacted by the wet weather, which meant very much a stop start year. With a smaller squad then we wished, the stop start season probably assisted us maintain enough playing numbers over the course of the season. Niggling injuries were able to be rested during the washed-out games.
Our first game started promising with a draw against a team we have struggled to beat recently. However, we were more than competitive, and it was our first game, so there were some good signs. Our 2nd game we ended up losing in a close contest 2-1, after being down 2-0 at half time. In the end this was probably the signs of what was to follow during the entire season. Our next 9 games we continued to lose by the narrowest of margins and on many occasions unlucky not to either score a goal to finish with a draw or we’d conceded a late goal to lose. Our last game we once again finished with a draw and once again unlucky not to score at the end, with a missed penalty. We were more than competitive in our games where we could’ve either won or draw. In the end we finished up with 2 draws, first and last games and 10 loses in the middle, 6 of those games we lost by a single goal. Our largest defeat was by 3 goals, which did occur against the top 2 teams.
In a season where we couldn’t manage to win a game, it was probably a little disappointing. However, we played some good football in patches and threatened most of the teams during the season. We made all the teams work for their points, it was just a season which we didn’t get a lot of luck. There were also several games where we were 3 goals down early. However, we still stuck to our game and managed to give those teams a bit of a scare and still could have managed a draw. While we finished the year a distant last with just 2 points, we were no easy beats even when we were down by a few goals. Many teams commenting that they couldn’t work out why we were in the position we were. We probably just had some lazy 15 minute patches in games which hurt us in the end
There were still some memories along the way which mostly summed up our season.
We say farewell to Perry (our goalie) who has now retired hanging up the gloves, thanks Perry for the memories over the years.
Once again, we saw Joe have another amazing season and was rock solid at the back.
Who would have thought that a shot bouncing in the 6 yard box manages to go over the top of the cross bar, we then saw in the same game a missed penalty where we had a further 3 goes and still couldn’t get it into the back of the net.
A missed penalty in our last game where we could have had our first and only win. Who thought it would have been Irish to missed it, usually very safe and reliable.
We also conceded a couple of late penalties which cost us either a draw or win.
It was hard to determine which was a best game, but it’ll probably be against Heathcote, who finished 2nd after the rounds. We were in front or level for most of the game just to concede 2 late goals in the last 10 minutes to lose the game.
Thanks to the limited supporters who showed up during the year and supported the team. To the team, again it was another tough year, but we never gave up and were very competitive in most games. Perhaps next year we can look forward to E’s. Thanks to all for the season and let’s bring on next year.
