With the very short preseason and last start to the season, I didn’t get a lot of time to get to know the girls prior to the first game.
Our first game was away to Cronulla Seagulls. Down 1-0 at half time, the girls turned it around and ran away with a well-deserved 3-01 win.
Confidence was high, leading into the next game against Kirrawee, where the girls won 2-0.
The following week (Round 3), I was very proud of the girls, with the way they handled the game considering earlier that week one of the girls lost her father. The minutes silence before the game by both teams was immaculate and after a few tense moments in the second half the girls won 2-0.
Then we had a 3 week non-scheduled break due to the weather. Our first game back was our worst game of the season against a very strong Georges River. Down 1-0 early, we had all the ball and more shots on goal, but Georges River ran over us with a 5-1 loss.
The next week we played what ended up Minor Premiers, Menai. A bad 15 minute spell in the 1st half and we were down 3-0, but in the 2nd half, we were all over Menai, and got back to 3-2, and then drama – we got a penalty with the last kick of the game. Our penalty hit the post and then the follow up hit the bar. WE might have lost, but it gave the girls huge confidence coming back from a 3 goal deficit to only lose in the last minute.
The girls then went on a 6 game winning stream, where we beat Georges River 2-1 with a goal by Ash in the last minute of the game, and then in the 2nd last round the girls beat Menai 1-0 at home with a goal from a corner by Shay.
The girl’s finish 2nd at the end of the season on goal difference, so played away to Menai in week 1 of the finals. Ash gave us an early 2nd lead, but Menai responded straight away. Then Menai scored with 3 minutes to play to an offside goal, and we go down 2-1.
Week 2, we played Georges River at The Fridge. First 50 minutes we didn’t turn up, and were down 2-0, Lucky then scores to make it 2-1, and we were pushing for an equaliser, but in the last minutes River scored and the game finished 3-1 and our season was over.
It has been a pleasure to coach the girls this year, I hope they all return next season where they will be playing W18s on a Sunday morning.
Huge thanks to Nicole as team manager, and all the parents and family members and friends who came along each week to support the girls.
