Hand on heart I can honestly say that this has been one of the most rewarding teams I have ever coached. To say that I have enjoyed coaching this amazing group of young footballers is an enormous understatement. But let me start with this, I am unbelievably proud of each of you. Every single one of you. You showed up. You worked hard. You supported each other. And together you grew, not just as footballers, but as teammates and friends.
As a club-appointed coach, it took some time and effort for the players and me to get to know one another. That said, I still managed to mix up ‘Chloe’ and ‘Cleo’—my sincere apologies to both girls!
Earlier in the year at a pre-season get-together, I didn’t give out many rules or demands to the players for the season ahead – except one. Don’t ever say ‘sorry’. I told them that I don’t care if you make a mistake at training or on game day. What I do expect is what you do after that mistake. That’s how you learn and I’m proud to say you all listened.
As a coach, it has been incredibly rewarding to watch this team come together each week to train and play as friends. There is a special bond among these girls—not only between those who have known each other for years, but also with the new players who joined the team. That connection has made my job so much easier.
It was a tough season in many regards. The high expectations of what many in this team had previously achieved in recent seasons; no designated goalkeeper; and only a 13-player squad. There’s no doubt A-Grade is a tough gig in any age group. However, having said all that I knew as well as the players, that with enough effort and determination they could again have another successful season. Reaching the Finals again in this grade is no easy thing and all the girls should be very proud of what they have accomplished this season.
I had the task of selecting someone for the Coach’s Player of Year Award. It was a tough ask as I could have given it to anyone in this team. I want ALL the players know they were in the running.
I must not forget to thank Sarah for everything that she has done. Not only all the help she gave me, but to all the players and parents. Thank you so much, you are second to none Sarah. Thank you also to all parents and family members. Your support week in week out has been amazing and very much appreciated by myself and I’m sure by the girls.
I’m hoping to be able to coach these girls again next season, so I’ll see you all at the 15’s grading trials.
Coach Glenn
